Batman: The Musical

I was stressed about money, so my mom was helping me look for jobs. I applied for a job she found for me and I went to interview for it. Another girl was applying too, and we were both sitting at the table with our mothers as we were being interviewed. The girl was a mix of my old friend Becky and my old co-worker Mir.

The man interviewing us gave the other girl an extremely harsh critique of her portfolio. Then it was my turn. I felt really unprepared. I hadn’t brought a copy of my resume or portfolio with me and I was having a hard time with my hair. As I fooled around with my hair and tried unsuccessfully to keep it from falling in my face, I asked him if he had seen my website and he said he had not. I was very direct and assertive when telling him how great it was.

The interview was going surprisingly well, so he asked me if I would like to meet the cast. I said “Sure!” and then we walked over to the stage and a whole bunch of people came out in costumes for a Batman movie. The interviewer explained to me that my job would be to make art for a Batman musical they were producing. I asked if he was kidding and the entire cast sang a really elaborate, “No, he’s nooooooot!” with multiple-part harmonies. Then they were all laughing and high-fiving each other, because that musical response had actually been unplanned.

The interviewer offered me the job, and I took it, even though I was actually completely unqualified to do the work they wanted me to do. I just assumed I would figure it out as I went along.
